Context
During the pandemic, Systematix Inc management was concerned about the reduced availability of in-person on-site visits from clients, business partners, and suppliers. As a result, the administration requested solutions to increase the company's visibility beyond standard social media channels.
Method
Research into the possibilities led me to propose and create an online virtual tour of the facility. The best online tour platforms were identified, and best practices for image capture were learned and applied to the proposal.
Design Process
A building map was created in Illustrator from existing architectural drawings, and optimal image capture points were identified for a smooth and engaging tour flow. A day was scheduled on the weekend, allowing as few people to be present in pictures as possible. Many hours were spent cleaning and staging the front office and industrial workspaces on the day of the shoot before the entire building-wide HDR shoot followed. After the initial offline draft tour was created, management feedback was incorporated to blur out any staff nameplates or sensitive or NDA-involved customer branding on products in or around the assembly floor. Interactive branding and imagery, such as clickable boardroom plaques, were also added.
Solution
The final product was a 360-degree virtual facility tour showcasing the Systematix Inc facility engagingly and interactively. ~565 images were captured over 102 locations across the 96000 sq ft workspace. A quick interactive map was added to navigate the building quickly to specific areas, while some interactive components were added, such as click-and-view boardroom dedication plaques.
Results
Online analytics demonstrated that the virtual tour highly increased website traffic and engagement. In addition, it proved to be an innovative solution that allowed for increased visibility and accessibility during limited on-site visits. Management was impressed as they didn't even realize a free moving virtual tour like this was possible or that we could create one in-house. A second tour phase may be launched in future, incorporating additional interactive content such as department introductions, employee interviews and service or capability videos.
